Facebook is a social network site that is free for all to join. It is a common site that most teens and college students join to keep in touch with friends and family all over the world. When it was first started it was only for college and high school students but that has now changed. Recently, older adults are using Facebook. Facebook has over 200-million users and the fastest growing group of new users is people aged 34-54. Also, more young children are using Facebook because they see their parents on Facebook. Children are cyber smart and feel very grown-up using their parents social networking site. Facebook is not safe for children because they are not mature and old enough to make wise decisions, there are online predators, and identity theft.

Many people argue that Facebook is safe for children. They argue that it depends on the maturity of the child, their peer group dynamics, and the privacy settings on their profile. Mature children want to feel like a grown up, so they want use their parents social networking site. Children who are mature can make good decisions which make Facebook safe for them. Children also want a account because all their peers in school have it. If their peers have Facebook for the right reasons, which are to just socialize with friends and play games, then Facebook will be safe for children. People argue that in order to keep children safe one must set up their profile page, use the settings tool to control who can see the child’s profile, which can search for them, and what other users can see. This can help online predators from searching children which will make it safe for children. Marc Bigbie, a software salesman, has three children who are 14, 12 and 11 and all have accounts on Facebook. When his oldest daughter was 11, she was the first in the family to create an account, on Myspace without her parents’ permission.”It was kind of a negative thing at first,” he said. They took the account away from her but then they finally let their child have it, but they kept the password so they can be on there at any time. Ever since that incident, all three of the kids received a Facebook account, with their parents even agreeing to lie about their ages.I argue against these claims because one may think their child is mature enough to have Facebook but they are not old enough to make wise decisions. There are child abductors and other criminals that use Facebook to attract kids into meeting them in person by lying about their age and interests. Even if parents set their child pages on block so people can search them, children can still search for people to become friends with. They may add a new friend thinking it’s someone their age, but it can be a child abductor.

Facebook is not safe for children because they are not mature and old enough to make wise decisions. Children are still kids and even if they are mature, they are not old enough to make wise decisions for themselves. Children like Facebook for so many reasons such as Facebook’s real time status reports, the clever quizzes, and the ability to chat with their friends. They do not realize that every time they fill out one of those quiz applications the site is receiving more information about them. Every time they complete a cute quiz, Facebook is gathering marketing data on children and their profile page will be targeted by advertisers. So, when children posts the cute game called “Five Things Within My reach Now,” or “Five Things I Want for my Birthday,” they will be see so many ads for similar products just before their birthday comes around. The main problem is not the ads but the big problem is that the web is receiving so much information about a child which is not safe. Children are just not old and mature enough to understand this and cannot make wise decisions to keep them safe on Facebook.

There are so many online predators on Facebook and are targeting children. In this case, sometimes is not even safe for adults because they do not know if their new friend is a sex offender because they deceive themselves as someone else. I do not think Facebook is safe for children because there are so money sex offenders that have social networking sites. New York recently revealed 2,782 sex offenders were using Facebook, some under multiple screen names. This is a problem that needs to be fixed but until then children should not use Facebook because it is not safe.

Hacking can be a big problem for Facebook users. Hackers receive people’s password and gets a hold of Facebook user’s information. This is out of peoples control but can be worked out. This is not safe for anyone and is certainly not safe for children. Bryan Rutberg’s had been hacked on Facebook and it caused a big problem. The hacker posted on his status “Bryan NEEDS HELP URGENTLY!!!””His online friends saw the message and tried to do what they could to help. Some posted concerned messages on his public profile. One asked “What’s happening? What do you need?” Another friend, Beny Rubinstein, got a direct message saying Rutberg had been robbed at gunpoint in London and needed money to get back to the United States. So, by being a good friend, Rubinstein wired $1,143 to London in two installments, according to police in Bellevue, Washington. This shows that hacking is a big issue in social networking sites. Hackers are stealing people’s identity. Sometimes adults do not know how to address the problem so children would definitely not know what to do in this kind of situation. Facebook is not safe for children because there are hackers that steal people’s identity.

Many people believe that Facebook is safe for children but I argue that, it is not because children are not old or mature enough to make wise decisions, there are online predators and identity theft. People can argue that Facebook can become a safe networking site for children. However, Facebook is not a 100% safe network for everyone to use so we should not put children in danger. Ways we can stop children from using Facebook is first by not allowing it. Parents should not let their children use it. People should not accept a child’s friend request if they look younger than 16. Children should be restricted from using Facebook. Facebook should require users to scan their ages to make sure they are not lying about their age. This will not only make it safe for children but for everyone. The creator of Facebook will also know if there is an online predator. Facebook was made for college and high school students and children should not have access to it. This will help children from making bad decisions, keep them away from online predators and identity theft.

Chapter 1

The communist in Europe was ended but in the mid-1990 a new society was formed called cyberspace. Cyberspace became a target for libertarian utopianism. The government could not regulate cyberspace. Cyberspace was free and governments could not do anything to control. “The society of this space would be a fully self-ordering entity, cleansed of governors and free from political hacks.” In cyberspace code regulates quite differently, the software and hardware makes cyberspace what it is and also regulate cyberspace as it is. The author quotes “We are at a stage in our history when we urgently need to make fundamental choices about values, but we should trust no institution of government to make such choices.”

Chapter 2

Cyberspace is more than just email, Amazon and Google. Many people who are over the age of 40 there is no such thing as cyberspace but for their children it’s a “second life”. Chapter 2 explains cyberspace in 4 points by explaining four different stories. Two describes cyberspace and the other two describe characteristics of the Internet. The lesson of the first theme is “regulability” which explains how regulation in cyberspace can help people see how all regulation works. The second theme is “Regulation by Code.” This theme explains how regulation will render ambiguous certain values that are fundamental to tradition. The third theme is “latent ambiguity.” In this theme the point is that ambiguity will require the United States, to make a choice. The fourth theme is ”competing sovereigns”. The author states that “the hardest problem will be to reckon these “competing sovereigns,” as they each act to mark this space with their own distinctive values.” He concludes that he believes the Net can be regulated.

Chapter 3

Cyberspace is a place where nature has no rule, a place that is constructed, but is cofused with how something is and how it must be. ”But how cyberspace is is not how cyberspace has to be. There is no single way that the Net has to be; no single architecture that defines the nature of the Net”. People are used to thinking how the way they find things is the way things have to be. People don’t think about how technology works, it works like plastic, it can be remade to do different things.

Chapter 4

Chapter emphasizes how if you don’t know someone, don’t know where they are, or what they are doing you can’t regulate them. The behavior of that person will remain how they want it to be. This is an example of the internet. You can try to regulate young people from using social sites but they can lie and say they are older. The technologies people use has three ideas identity, authentication, and credential to identify who someone is. “Identity” is more than a person identity; it’s your name, your sex, where you live, what your education is, your driver’s license number, your social security number, your purchases on Amazon.com, and where you worked at. “Authentication” is when people want to become more confident about the truth about some asserted claim. “Credential” is defined as a standardized device for authenticating (to some level of confidence) an assertion made.

Chapter 5

There are now technologies to help know who is on the net and where they are. This helps with businesses and its makes the net a lot safer. These technologies are to help make the Net more reguable but it’s not perfectly reguable. This chapter discusses examples that address a behavior that the government wants to regulate. It cannot easily regulate directly. In the examples ”the government regulates that behavior indirectly by directly regulating technologies that affect that behavior.” The conclusion of this chapter is that there are indeed similar ways that the government might regulate code on the Internet to make behavior on the Net more regulable.

Scott Snibbe has a masters in Computer Science and Fine Art. He studied experimental animation. His work is internationally known. He taught Media, Art, and experimental film. Scott opens up the lecture by talking about how when he was young he used to think about where the hand starts. We know where the arm is and how the fingers is part of our hand but what about near the wrist, how do we know where the hand actually starts.

His first peace was about boundary functions which was started in 1998. It reflects on peoples space. He states that we don’t have personal space until we are around others to define it.He culturally defined distance in different countries. In Germany the people didn’t do anything to figure it out. In Japan the people got real close to each other. In New York the people stood there and just spoke to one another.

In 2002 he started wall protected work called Compliant. He deals with interactivity and is different from others who works with interactivity because he tries his best to make art work continuous. He defines discreet as you press a button and something happens. he defines continuous as he makes a continuous charge and you have a continuous analysis in reaction. He created many exhibits one is Concentration which is when you walk in a rectangle and a light surrounds your body. If its more than one person in front of it you have to activate the light on the other person by touching that person. Shadow Bag which is when you bump into someones shadow it slowly dissolves. Deep Walls is when the movement of your shadow records you. Cause and Effect was based on a Buddha idea. It reflects on Karma which means more than what we think it is. It mean the way that everything happens.

Scott Snibbe also does a lot of work in science museums. One cool exhibit he created was Woman hold up half the sky which is different working in the lab and doing research. Another cool exhibit he worked on was Fear. There was a jaguar and if you moved too much it would attack you. The children loved this one.Overall I found Scott Snibbe work were very interesting and fun.

Since Vista had a lot of problems Windows 7 was created. People are really excited about this one. Windows 7 promises a smoother user experience, multi-touchscreen capability and more seamless networking with other computers. The windows 7 software will cost from $120 to $220, depending on which version. Installing windows 7 is simple when imstallng from a vista but is more complicated when installing from a XP.I think Windows 7 is worth buying if you have vista because it has caused problem to almost everyone so what more can one lose. This article was interesting to me because I wanted to know a little more about Windows 7. The idea of it seems great and I think many people will buy it but I think many others may be afraid to.

The economy is pretty bad so companies are now using video-chat software as a cheap, low-hassle way to get job candidates. Stephen Bhadran after getting laid off had job openings for computer programmers in Dallas, Atlanta and Los Angeles than where he lived, so he requested to have his job interview on skype. He got his request and the job. I thought this article was pretty interesting. I think using skype for a job interview is a great idea for people who can’t get around to different states because it can be quite expensive. Just as there are rules for job interviews in person there are rules for job interviews on skype. You can’t be in a messy room or have you r dog barking. Using skype for a job interview can be a plus, but can also be negative job interviewers may want you to be in person.

Facebook and twitter are being attacked by cyberthieves. It takes just one click for you to be tricked to fake websites where they can get your personal information and passward. Its known as known as a phishing attack or malware. Phishing attacks on social networks has a 70 percent success rate. This was discovered by a study from the Indiana University in 2005. The first virus attack on the PC occurred in 1986 and has been considered by many Internet security experts. I found this article interesting becuase I have a facebook and i know alot of people have facebook. I want to make sure I am aware of cybertheives and be sure I am protecting my account. Facebook is great for keeping in contact with old freinds and family and be social. The bad thing about is that there are cybertheives that can get people information and a lot of wrong thing with the site.

Two nanotechnology researchers are trying to create a way for people to charge their phones by walking. Nanotechnology researchers are developing cleaner more efficient ways of delivering electrical power. Even just moving your fingers while typing can create energy that can power a small device. Researchers have tested this experiment on animals. I thought this article was quite interesting by just reading the grabber sentence asking the question, “Forgot to charge your cell phone last night? Imagine that you could power it by walking. Weirder still, you might be able to just spray a new battery on. ” I think this is a cool thing to think about because its an easy way to charge your phones considering now people love efficiency, but I think most people will be scared if they were the ones that had to put a small chip under their skins. The pros and cons of this technology is that it has been tested so some people may feel safe to do it but others may be frightened.

iphones are giving AT&T’s a bad reputation by their poor network. AT&T are denying the bad network. Other phone comapanies scored better thn AT&T by customers satisfaction for smartphones. AT&T usually have been quite good with their sellings but now they are coming up last from other smartphone users. there bad reputaion may have occurred by complaining customers who write their bad expereinces on bloogs, twitter, ppublished reports from BusinessWeek and NewYork Times. Half of iphone users switched from another carrier. They may switch to another carrier if they can get the same experience with a diferent network. I was interested in this article because I have a AT&T phone and have been considering buying an iphone. This article gives readers some information they may have not known. The good thing of this technology is that untill there is new phone better than the iphone people will continue buying the iphone. The negative thing of the technology may be that it will be soon will a new phone comes out and everyone will switch to that phone
